With a formidable collection of craft supplies (everything from glitter to crayons to beads), this Chicago craft closet organization project required storing plenty of materials in an organized capacity. While the homeowner purchased Rubbermaid stackable drawers, it was merely the jumping off point. What we really needed was shelving. Lots and lots of shelving.

Mise En Place Home Edits took measurements of the craft closet. Then, we generated ideas in an intuitive brainstorming session. After the homeowner built the shelving components, we pulled all of the arts and crafts supplies out of the closet. Next, we sorted the materials into mini categories.

With many items, we would not necessarily recommend sorting them into small groups. However, arts and crafts supplies should really be kept together for organization’s sake. 

Chicago Craft Closet Organization: Passing on the Legacy

Beyond the sorting, we also had to contend with another factor for this Chicago craft closet organization project: her children. After all, the homeowner saw arts and crafts as a fun passion project. Of course, she wants to pass her legacy on to her children.

Creating colorful, laminated pictures meant her children could easily decipher which bins contained which materials. Instead of having her children fish for every individual supply, her children could conceptually understand what to find where (and how to clean them up afterwards, too).
