Organizing Your Children's Playroom to Foster a Fun, New Environment

Organizing your children’s playroom should prioritize building a fun, new environment. Because the homeowner runs a local daycare, much of the environment already felt organized. However, it needed some help defining zones and play areas to maximize the space’s value to the children.

Many playroom spaces feature a large, open environment. Based on the architecture, homeowners may instinctually feel that they should push everything against the wall, keeping the middle open.

Ultimately, this tactic does not lend itself well to fostering a fun, new environment for children. One of the reasons is because it immediately stifles children’s creativity.

Organizing Your Children’s Playroom: Introducing the Cubby System

After discussing some preliminary ideas, we settled on a simple, white cubby system. Cubby systems tend to greatly reduce anxiety, and generate a plethora of opportunity when organizing your children’s playroom. Cubby houses offer the opportunity to make sense of so many changes as they provide clear boundaries for children. In doing so, cubby systems support privacy and create a safe space for toys and supplies.

Placing the cubby system lengthwise against the wall, created “two rooms” for the children. Once we constructed the first side, we then established a doll area. The other side also featured another toy area. In preschools, you often see different play zones to help the kids play and understand the concept of cleaning up after themselves.

Organizing Your Children’s Playroom: Adding in the Rest

When organizing your children’s playroom, incorporate toy bins whenever possible. For this project, Mise En Place Home Edits instituted a large toy bin for large cars and trucks.

On one full wall, we also set up bean bag chair and a reading nook. Similar to cubby systems, reading nooks remove anxiety and external pressure, fostering a safe space.

But there were plenty of items leftover. We placed these toward the center of the room. This strategy gave the space intention and texture. Best of all, it did not take long!

Summary

Organizing your children’s playroom revolves around creating a fun, new environment. And the process can be just as fun.
